August 2005
Until Sunday, August 28th - Firehouse Gallery (135 Church St.) in Burlington - At An Angle - Los Angeles-based Asuka Ohsawa creates gouache-on-paper drawings, which merge traditional Japanese aesthetics with cartoon characters derived from comic books and popular culture. Through these subversive scenarios, Ohsawa attempts to raise important societal questions and concerns. In a similar vein, New Hampshire-based Kirsten Reynolds employs uncomfortable humor as an intentional means of provoking thought. Her large, site-specific sculpture, At This Last Moment, leans precariously in a space populated by ambiguous creatures. Together, the two artists merge comedy, narrative, and architectural space into challenging and skillful works of art.
